It is about a wealthy family sitting down at the dining table after dinner with an unexpected visitor entering and disturbing the mood. In this play, Priestley is trying to communicate a message of responsibility towards others and taking liability for our own actions. This style of writing is called a didactic or morality play. Preistley was influenced to write this play in 1945, after having witnessed the disturbing and terrible images of both World Wars as a front line soldier; therefore Preistley was determined to share his experiences with other people. It is significant in An Inspector Calls that the audience is aware of the events that transpired between the time the play is set and the time that the play was written, as this aids the audience in gaining a better perception and becoming conscious of irony that occurs in the play. Priestly uses his characters to represent different moral views; the main representation is the Inspector who represents ones conscience and how our conscience can have a significant effect on our actions. To engage the audiences attention the author uses the Inspectors presence and his actions to make both characters and the audience feel tense. We find the timing of the Inspectors arrival rather ironic, as Mr Birling is preaching to his family about how one should only look after themselves, that a man has to mind his own business and look after himself and his own. We find his speech being, ironically interrupted by a doorbell, which shows the audience that there is a disturbance to the somewhat egotistic mood. This focuses audiences attention because they want to uncover what the disturbance is and why the timing of the disturbance was so ironic, and this creates a tense and dramatic atmosphere. Upon entering the room, the Inspector is described as giving an impression of massiveness, solidity and purposefulness, the words used to describe the Inspector make both the audience and other characters feel tense, because the Inspectors character is portrayed as intimidating. The word massiveness suggests that the Inspector is immense, deep and has a vast knowledge of each character. The word solidity portrays the Inspectors character as firm and vigorous. Finally, the word purposefulness shows the audience that the Inspector has a strong intention and is determined to uncover the truth. The use of these three words shows to both characters and the audience that the Inspector has a very daunting presence and creates a significant amount of tension upon entering the scene. As the Inspector begins to interrogate the Birling family, the audience recognizes that the Inspectors method of interrogating is very different from any other Inspector in that era. It is evident that the Inspector maintains direct eye contact with the character he is interrogating,  Coolly, looking hard at him  This phrase creates an unfriendly and cold tone, which manifests tension in the characters, because the words Coolly and hard emphasises the Inspectors unique composure and his firm approach to interrogating each character. This method of interrogating captures the audiences attention, through the pressure that is created in using direct eye contact. The Inspectors method of interrogating has a significant effect on each of the characters. It was also suggested that the following points for effective interviewer: asking precise questions, avoiding perceptions, avoiding discriminative questions, taking good time before concluding and ‘keeping written records of the interviews’ (p.246). Peer AssessmentPeer assessment is another approach that is preferred by some companies. Peers are people who have direct interaction with individual and knows individual well. Chief Executive officer is the senior officer of the organisation and is the overall person incharge of the organisation. Every department in the organisation has specific duties and responsibilities to do. The Chief Executive Officer is entrusted with the responsibility of development strategies and formulating policies in line with the goals and objectives of the agency (US Dept of Labour, Bureau of Labour Statistics 2004, p.64).   The executive represents the agency in important meeting of the board of directors and is answerable to the board of directors of the agency. A chief executive officer also has a responsibility of hiring departmental heads of an organisation. According to Pidgeon (2004, p.192) the duties of Chief Executive Officer is to lead an organization into the future. He makes sure that the task of the employer is well done (Acutt and Hattingh 20 03, p.38). Profile Chief Executive Officer The Chief Executive officer of a travel agency must be arguably, experienced in managerial position or has held or served previously under the same capacity (U. S. Department of Labour 2000). He or she must possess high personal skills and good analytical mind that is able to analyze a lot of information within a short period of time effectively. Furthermore, he/she must be in a position to communicate ‘precisely and persuasively’ and also exemplify qualities such as ‘leadership, self-confidence, motivation, decisiveness, flexibility and sound business judgment’ (U. S. Department of Labour 2000, p.82). The minimum educational qualification for the candidate must be a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts or business administration (p.32). Approach for SelectionThe best approach to employ in select a candidate for a post of Chief Executive Officer of a travel agency is personality test. Using situation tests, behaviour of a candidate under stress situation as Chief Executive Officer can be predicted. This method also can effectively measure the candidate persuasive and decisive skill as a Chief Executive Officer in attracting investors to the agency. ConclusionIn conclusion, organizations use different approaches depending on the kind of Job description and the qualities they are looking for. For executive positions organisations prefer personality tests and performance tests. This test has proofed to be successful since it can predict the performance of candidate as a Chief Executive Officer in specific challenging situations. There are two types of performance test: work sample and assessment centres. Assessment centres employ technique of role plays and public speaking to assess candidates ability to tackle problems. This method has been echoed by many people as the most accurate; however it is a bit expensive. Likewise personality test has proofed to be the best approach in selecting candidates. There are four types of personality tests: Objective test, protective test, situation test, and interest test. The test is carried out to measures candidates’ attributes or characteristics. An interview is also one of the most widely used approaches. This is done in a way of conversation between the representatives of the employers and the candidate. There are two types of interviews employed by companies: bio-data or biographical, behavioural and situation interview. Interviews have been cited as sometimes ineffective; the interviewers’ level of training may not be adequate for facilitating interviews. This is because the burning up of candles is purely depended on the amount of Oxygen confined in the jar. Jake in Transition Essay The following essay is in response to the Jake in Transition exhibit which displayed the many psychological and physical stages Jake went through to change his gender from a woman to a man. The artist of the exhibition demonstrated different stages of Jake’s transition from female to male. As the artists discussed in his interview, he felt â€Å"awkward† at first when photographing Jake. This awkwardness is to be expected, society has socialized us to feel certain ways about gender, creating stereotypical feelings. Since the time an individual is born, they are taught by society what is expected of them as either a male or female. However, in some cases such as Jake’s, some individuals are born one gender and feel as though their gender is a wrong fit. In Jakes case, he was born a female but was so uncomfortable in his own body that he felt he had to physically change it to a male body in order to be comfortable. I believe Jake felt the need to conform to society’s gender ‘norms†; his body was female but he felt he did not demonstrate typical female attributes as depicted by society. Jake went to extreme measures to conform. Jake discussed how he felt being a woman, his fear of being considered a â€Å"freak† because he was trapped inside a woman’s body with the mentality and tendencies of a man are a result of society’s ideology of gender roles. Jake went against this ideology when deciding to take surgical measures to become a man. Jake demonstrates his â€Å"natural† male instincts after his surgical procedure when he marries the woman he loves. Other activities he enjoys, such as, horse riding and playing the guitar are not typically attributed to either gender; as both men and women enjoy partaking in such activities but Jake however feels these are masculine activities. The exhibit displayed Jakes surgery photos, which caused me antagonistic feelings at first. I had not expected to be effected by this, breast surgeries are broadcasted on the television daily. Jake however, was removing her female identity, I am still unsure if this is a personal feeling or one that I have been trained by society to believe is wrong. I am leaning towards the latter, since I can not identify with Jake’s unhappiness with his born gender. I can not say I agree with changing ones gender through surgery. I do however understand Jake’s need to share his experience, in hopes to find acceptance in a society with such rigid gender norms. I question the underlying factor that caused Jake to go through such extremes as to remove all traces of femininity. I feel there must have been a deep resentment of his female body for him to go against nature and wipe out his female gender. If it were just a matter of sexuality, that Jake was attracted to females, I doubt it would have led to him getting surgery. I was deeply disturbed by the story of â€Å"x†. It disgusted me that anyone could have given birth to a baby for the sole purpose of using it for an experiment; and inevitably ruining its future. Baby X was raised without an identity. Gender roles, while drastically influenced by society, gives an individual a purpose. Jake was confused by his feelings which he did not associate with being female and thus changed his physical image to match his feelings of masculinity. X however, had no basis in which to judge its feelings. X was not socialized in a way that would help him understand his identity. Although we are not told what happens to X past elementary school, I foresee him having extreme emotional problems; more specifically, a lack of identity. Jake felt he did not fit in with females but X has no reference in which to judge if he fits in or not. Society influences how we see â€Å"normal† gender roles. Many, if not all, cultures have an essentialist view of what roles are contributed to males and females. While some individuals may feel that they do not conform to this ideology; Jake took drastic measures in which to conform. I think this says a lot for the extreme influence society has on gender roles. Jake wanted his body to look as masculine as he felt; so he would not feel like a contradiction to societies norms.

Religious Wars Religion has played a key role in wars and death. Religion is the basis of belief for humans, it is a belief that there is a higher being that watches over us guiding us, a belief that there is life after death and if we follow these beliefs we shall enter heaven the most beautiful place. However religion has also played a role in wars, religious conflicts in Ireland (Protestants and Catholics). Israelis and Arabs (Holy Land) and the Holy Crusades of the eleventh century (recapturing the Holy Land). In Israel Jews and Arabs have been in conflict for hundreds of years because they both share religious grounds in Israel. Since the founding of Israel in 1948 there has been continuous conflict between Israel and Arab states. This conflict has been marked by six bloody wars. On both sides, religion has again and again brought the peace process to the brink of annihilation. The first spark between the two sides started in Hebron, the site of the tombs of patriarchs, building sacred to both Jews and Arabs. Early in 1994 Baruch Goldstein, a religious Jew, opened fire and killed thirty nine Arabs while at prayer. In response to the Hebron killings, two Arab suicide bombers blew up Jewish buses in northern and central Israel. Fifteen died and seventy were injured (Peres 1995 p.177-178). There are still wars going on today, Israel against Palestine The Crusades were medieval military expeditions undertaken by European Christians to recapture the Holy Land from the Muslims (Collins new English Dictionary 1997). The word crusade is taken from the Latin word crux (cross) this is a reference to the biblical injunction that Christians carry their cross. Crusaders wore a red cloth that was sewn on their tunics to show that they took on the cross and were soldiers of Christ (Runciman, Steven, A history of the Crusades, 3 vols 1951-1954; Rep 1987). The causes of the crusades were many and complex but religion was the main factor. It was regarded as justifiable war, because it was fought to recapture the places sacred to Christians. There were 3 wars, and the Romans won every time. This war turned Rome from a small city state to an empire. When they won this war, they got land, slaves, and wealth. This caused the Patricians to benefit greatly, but the plebeians did not. This caused a larger gap between the rich and poor. D The roman army started recruiting people and pay them for their service. This is when the Roman army shifts from a citizenship army to a Professional army. This change = very Important. The USA is now a professional army too and we also have a wealth gap. We are the modern day Rome. Republic In Crawls (146-31 BCC) a Patricians wanted to malting their privileges so they wanted to support political parties that would benefit the rich. B Plebeians wanted to support ones that would help the poor. This caused an outbreak and a loss of respect for the law (murder, and overall breaking laws) When people begin to not care about the law the republic started to fall. D Julius Caesar came from a Patricia n family, but made everyone love him. He tried to help the Plebeians too. He then got himself elected Consul for life. But, they assassinated Caesar because they thought he had too much power.They thought that they were saving the Republic, but his friends and family (Octavia {nephew} and Marc Antonym {friend)) They hunted down and killed everyone who was involved in killing Julius. But, Marc and Octavia hated each other, but they worked or with each other in memory of Julius. So, they broke out in a Civil war over who would have control of Rome. Octavia won, even though Marc Antonym had the help of Cleopatra behind him. After he won, Antonym and Cleopatra committed suicide. They began a "cleansing" in order to create and expand their "Superior Race" by going after "insignificant races". The Nazi Germans put people through lots of hardships from 1933-1945. The theory of evolution is based on individuals acquiring unique traits that enable those possessing the new traits to better survive adverse conditions compared to those who don’t possess them. Superior individuals will be more likely to survive and pass on these traits to their offspring so such traits will increase in number, while the ‘weaker’ individuals will eventually die off. If every member of a species were fully equal, natural selection would have nothing to select from, and evolution would cease for that species. These differences gradually produce new groups, some of which have an advantage in terms of survival. These new groups became the superior, or the more evolved races. When a trait eventually spreads throughout the entire race because of the survival advantage it confers on those that possess it, a higher, more evolved form of animal will result. Hitler and the Nazi party claimed that one of their major goals was to apply this accepted ‘science’ to society. And ‘the core idea of Darwinism was not evolution, but selection. Evolution †¦ describes the results of selection’. Hitler stressed that to produce a better society ‘we [the Nazis] must understand, and cooperate with science’. As the one race above all others, Aryans believed that their evolutionary superiority gave them not only the right, but the duty to subjugate all other peoples. Through study from book and through scientific views, Germans began to see what made other races inferior and began to see themselves and the superior race among all. Hitler took complete power of the German Nation as a dictator and spent a few years preparing for war to targeting inferior races. Hitler saw himself as responsible to create a Superior Race and as having the rights to do whatever he could to complete this objective. Hitler believed humans were animals to whom the genetics laws, learned from livestock breeding, could be applied. The Nazis believed that instead of permitting natural forces and chance to control evolution, they must direct the process to advance the human race. The first step to achieve this goal was to isolate the ‘inferior races’ in order to prevent them from further contaminating the ‘Aryan’ gene pool. The widespread public support for this policy was a result of the belief, common in the educated classes, in the conclusion that certain races were genetically inferior as was scientifically ‘proven’ by Darwinism. The Nazis believed that they were simply applying facts, proven by science, to produce a superior race of humans as part of their plan for a better world. According to Nazism, it is an obvious mistake to permit or encourage multilingualism and multiculturalism within a nation. Fundamental to the Nazi goal was the unification of all German-speaking peoples, "unjustly" divided into different Nation States. Hitler claimed that nations that could not defend their territory did not deserve it. Slave races, he thought of as less-worthy to exist than "master races." In particular, if a master race should require room to live, he thought such a race should have the right to displace the inferior indigenous races. Hitler draws parallels between Lebensraum and the American ethnic cleansing and relocation policies towards the Native Americans, which he saw as key to the success of the US. "Races without homelands," Hitler claimed, were "parasitic races," and the richer the members of a "parasitic race" are, the more "virulent" the parasitism was thought to be.
